Writer-Director Julian Breece (nominated for Gee Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) makes a striking debut
with THE YOUNG & EVIL, a dramatic short about a defiantly
promiscuous young man who sets out to contract the HIV virus.
Referencing the controversial 1930s novel of the same title, THE YOUNG
& EVIL provides a chilling lens into how fear, faithlessness and
longing miscolor the need for human connection.
Newcomer Vaughn Lowery stakes claim as this year's young actor to
watch with his complex and searing portrayal of a steel-eyed rebel who
finds eros in self-destruction.
Shot in South Central Los Angeles by veteran cinematographer Carl
Bartels, THE YOUNG & EVIL presents a unique and seductively stylish
vision. Pulsing with atmosphere and authenticity, the film undulates
between severe urban grit and haunting metaphor. With Breece's
protagonist as our guide, we're ushered into a labyrinthine world of
shadows, where touch equals salvation.
The Young and Evil (TYE) made it's world premiere in Frameline 32 (at San Francisco's historical Castro Theatre). The opening scene of the movie received a thunderous applause. By the time the film came to an end, we were all blown away and on the edge of our seats. Afterall, this was the first time I have ever seen the final version of the film.
In addition, our film received a completion grant from Frameline 32 and they named the short film series after our project.
